Labuan Bajo: Submarine Cable Landing Point

Labuan Bajo is a town situated at the western tip of Flores island, within the East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia. As a coastal settlement on one of Indonesia's many eastern islands, it serves as a landing point for submarine cable infrastructure connecting communities across the region. One submarine cable currently lands at Labuan Bajo, linking it to other points within the Indonesian archipelago.

The single cable landing here, the Sape-Labuan Bajo-Ende-Kupang system, forms part of an intra-national corridor running through the eastern islands of Indonesia. This cable does not extend to foreign countries; its entire route connects Indonesian localities, making Labuan Bajo a node within a domestic inter-island network rather than an international gateway.

Cables Landing at Labuan Bajo

The Sape-Labuan Bajo-Ende-Kupang cable is 474 kilometres in length and reached ready-for-service status in 2021, though it carries a draft designation. The cable connects multiple Indonesian localities — as indicated by its name, spanning from Sape through Labuan Bajo and Ende to Kupang — all within the Indonesian archipelago. It does not extend beyond Indonesian territory. This system represents the sole submarine cable infrastructure currently associated with the Labuan Bajo landing point.

Regional Context

Within Indonesia's broader submarine cable landscape, Labuan Bajo is a modest landing point. The country hosts 70 submarine cables across 139 landing points, and major hubs such as Batam (20 cables), Jakarta (9 cables), and Tanjung Pakis (9 cables) serve as far more densely connected nodes. With one cable, Labuan Bajo ranks within the top 62 percent of Indonesian landing points by cable count, reflecting the reality that many of the country's 139 landing points serve localised, inter-island connectivity roles rather than high-volume international routing.

Network Role

Labuan Bajo functions as a single-cable terminus within a domestic inter-island corridor. The Sape-Labuan Bajo-Ende-Kupang cable provides connectivity along the chain of eastern Indonesian islands, linking Labuan Bajo on Flores to neighbouring localities such as Sape, Ende, and Kupang. This positions the town as a participant in the regional distribution of terrestrial connectivity across East Nusa Tenggara, extending fixed submarine infrastructure to a part of Indonesia where overland and cross-water cable alternatives are limited by the archipelagic geography.

As a single-cable landing point in a country with a wide distribution of cable infrastructure, Labuan Bajo illustrates how Indonesia's submarine cable network extends beyond its major western hubs to serve smaller communities across its eastern islands, helping to knit together a geographically fragmented nation through undersea connectivity.
