At 21:00 local time on August 20, 2026, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck 31 km northwest of the city of Anisio, Peru. The epicenter was located at a depth of approximately 10 km, classifying it as a shallow earthquake. Shallow earthquakes often have a more pronounced impact on the surface, making them particularly significant for infrastructure and communities in the affected area. The region is situated along the boundary of tectonic plates, specifically the convergence zone between the South American Plate and the Nazca Plate, which is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. This area is known for frequent seismic activity due to the ongoing subduction of the Nazca Plate beneath the South American Plate, making it a hotspot for earthquakes.

Within a radius of 500 km from the earthquake's epicenter, several critical submarine cables traverse the area, forming a vital part of the global communications infrastructure. Among these cables is the Fibra Optica al Pacífico, a 1180-km-long system commissioned in 2020. This cable connects key locations along the Pacific coast and lands at the port of Ilo, which is situated 415.1 km from the earthquake's epicenter. Despite its proximity to the seismic event, the cable's robust design and installation standards have ensured its stability.

Other significant cables in the region include the SAm-1 cable, a 25,000-km-long system that has been operational since 2001, the South American Crossing (SAC) cable, spanning 20,000 km and commissioned in 2000, and the South Pacific Cable System (SPCS)/Mistral, which extends 7,300 km and was launched in 2021. These cables are interconnected through a major node in Lurin, located 438.5 km from the epicenter. The strategic positioning of these cables and their interconnection points underscores the importance of the region as a hub for international data traffic.

Monitoring data

GeoCables' monitoring systems have confirmed that all submarine cables in the vicinity of the earthquake remain fully operational, with no disruptions or anomalies detected. Delay parameters, such as Round-Trip Time (RTT), are within baseline values across all monitored cables. For the Fibra Optica al Pacífico, the RTT is approximately 55 ms, which is consistent with normal operational conditions. Similar stability has been observed for other cables in the region, including SAm-1, SAC, and SPCS/Mistral. These findings affirm the resilience of the submarine cable infrastructure, which has successfully withstood the seismic impact without any degradation in performance.

These cables facilitate international data exchange, support economic activities, and enable communication across vast distances.
