About Leiston, United Kingdom

Leiston: Submarine Cable Landing Point

Leiston is a town in the East Suffolk district of Suffolk, England, situated approximately 34 kilometres north-east of Ipswich on the North Sea coast. As a submarine cable landing point, Leiston connects the United Kingdom to a cluster of Northern European nations, forming part of the dense regional cable network that spans the southern North Sea. Two submarine cables are recorded as landing at Leiston, both of which link the United Kingdom with Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, and Norway.

Both cables landing at Leiston belong to the IOEMA family of systems, currently in draft status with a projected readiness date of 2028 for at least one of the two. Together, they establish Leiston as an emerging point of interconnection between the United Kingdom and its North Sea neighbours, supporting regional European connectivity across a corridor that is geographically compact but informationally significant.

Cables Landing at Leiston

IOEMA is a submarine cable system with a total length of 1,620 kilometres, with a projected ready-for-service date of 2028. The system is currently in draft status. In addition to Leiston in the United Kingdom, IOEMA connects to landing points in Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, and Norway, forming a multi-country North Sea ring that links several of Northern Europe's major coastal economies.

IOEMA-1 is a related submarine cable system, also currently in draft status. Like IOEMA, it connects the United Kingdom with Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, and Norway. No length or ready-for-service date has been confirmed for IOEMA-1 at this stage. The pairing of IOEMA and IOEMA-1 at Leiston suggests that the site is being developed as a dual-cable terminus within this North Sea corridor.

Regional Context

Within the United Kingdom's submarine cable network, which spans 66 cables across 125 landing points, Leiston hosts two cables and ranks in the top 95 percent of domestic landing points by cable count. Among its regional peers, it is a smaller landing point compared to Bude with eight cables, Lowestoft with six, and Blackpool with four, but it is on par with landing points such as Broadstairs, Porthcurno, and Southport, each of which also hosts three cables or fewer.

Network Role

Leiston functions as a dedicated terminus for the IOEMA cable family, connecting the United Kingdom directly into a Northern European network that includes Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, and Norway. Both cables currently under development at this location serve the same regional corridor, making Leiston a focused rather than broadly diversified landing point. Once the IOEMA systems reach their projected 2028 service date, Leiston will contribute two active cable systems to the North Sea segment of the United Kingdom's submarine cable infrastructure.

As a two-cable hub oriented entirely toward Northern Europe, Leiston occupies a defined niche in the broader United Kingdom submarine cable graph, complementing the more multi-directional landing points elsewhere along the British coastline.
