About Uvira, Congo, Dem. Rep.

Uvira, Congo, Dem. Rep.: Submarine Cable Landing Point

Uvira is a city situated in the South Kivu Province of the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, positioned along the western shore of Lake Tanganyika where the lake borders both the DRC and Burundi. As a landing point for submarine cable infrastructure, Uvira connects to the lacustrine cable network that runs beneath Lake Tanganyika. One submarine cable lands at Uvira, making it one of five landing points for underwater cable systems across the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The single cable landing at Uvira is the Lake Tanganyika cable, a system that operates entirely within the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Rather than spanning oceanic distances, this cable traverses the length of Lake Tanganyika, connecting multiple Congolese communities along its shoreline. The corridor it enables is accordingly an intra-national, inland-lake route, distinct from the deep-sea intercontinental systems that characterize most submarine cable infrastructure.

Cables Landing at Uvira

The Lake Tanganyika cable spans approximately 370 kilometres and is scheduled for readiness for service in 2025, though the system remains in draft status. The cable connects landing points exclusively within the Democratic Republic of the Congo, linking Uvira with other Congolese communities situated along the shores of Lake Tanganyika. As a domestic lacustrine cable, it represents a connectivity solution tailored to the geographic realities of a landlocked lake shared by multiple riparian nations, with the Congolese segment serving points along the DRC's eastern shoreline.

Regional Context

Within the Democratic Republic of the Congo's submarine cable landscape, Uvira is one of five landing points alongside Muanda, Kalemie, Kasenyi, and Tchoima. Muanda hosts two cables, giving it the largest concentration of submarine cable landings in the country, while Uvira, Kalemie, Kasenyi, and Tchoima each host a single cable. Uvira is therefore among the majority of Congolese landing points in terms of cable count, sharing a single-cable profile with three of its four peers.

Network Role

Uvira functions as a single-cable terminus on the Lake Tanganyika system, serving an intra-national corridor rather than an international or intercontinental route. Its role is to extend underwater cable connectivity along the DRC's eastern lakeshore, a geography where overland connectivity can be constrained by mountainous terrain and the natural barriers of the Mitumba mountains and the Ruzizi Plain. The Lake Tanganyika cable, when commissioned, will provide Uvira with a dedicated aquatic data pathway connecting it to other Congolese lakeshore communities along the same system.

As one of five submarine cable landing points in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uvira contributes to a national picture of distributed underwater connectivity that spans both the Atlantic coast at Muanda and the inland lake systems of the country's east. Its presence in the eastern DRC reflects the expanding use of lacustrine cable technology to serve geographically dispersed populations within the Congolese interior.
