About Pointe-Noire, Congo, Rep.

Pointe-Noire: Congo's Gateway to Global Connectivity

Pointe-Noire, located on the Atlantic coast of the Republic of Congo, serves as the country's sole submarine cable landing point. Despite this singular connection, it plays an essential role in linking the nation to the broader world through two major cables: the West Africa Cable System (WACS) and the 2Africa cable.

The Cables Bringing the World to Pointe-Noire

The WACS cable, operational since 2012, spans 14,530 km and connects Pointe-Noire to 12 other landing points across West Africa and Europe. These include major hubs like Lagos, Accra, and Seixal. WACS has been a foundational link for the Republic of Congo, providing reliable connectivity to regional neighbors like Angola and Cameroon, as well as to distant points such as Cape Verde and Portugal. The 2Africa cable, set to become operational in 2024, represents a massive leap in global connectivity. Stretching an impressive 45,000 km, it is one of the longest submarine cables ever built. Pointe-Noire is one of 49 landing points along this cable, which connects countries as diverse as Bahrain, Côte d'Ivoire, Djibouti, and Spain. Once active, 2Africa will further integrate Pointe-Noire into a vast international network, enhancing the city's role as a digital hub for the region.

Connectivity in the Republic of Congo

The Republic of Congo relies entirely on Pointe-Noire for its submarine cable connections. With just two cables landing here, the country's average cable length of 29,765 km reflects its reliance on extensive international networks to maintain connectivity. The addition of the 2Africa cable will significantly bolster this infrastructure, complementing the decade-long service provided by WACS.

Latency Insights: Measured Performance

GeoCables' latency monitoring reveals fascinating insights into Pointe-Noire's connectivity performance. Across 18 completed checks from six source cities, the average round-trip latency to Pointe-Noire is 257 ms, with the best observed latency being an impressive 51 ms. These measurements highlight the efficiency of the submarine cables in bridging vast distances, ensuring that Pointe-Noire remains a viable node in global communication networks.

Why Pointe-Noire Matters

Pointe-Noire's importance extends beyond its role as a cable landing point. As one of Congo's largest cities and a major port, it serves as an economic and industrial hub for the nation. The connectivity provided by WACS and, soon, 2Africa supports industries ranging from shipping to oil production, enabling the exchange of critical data and communication with partners worldwide. While Pointe-Noire may have only two cables landing on its shores, these connections are more than sufficient to keep the city-and the Republic of Congo-linked to the global digital economy. With the upcoming arrival of 2Africa, Pointe-Noire is poised to strengthen its position as a key player in regional and international connectivity.
