Earthquake Near Teluknaga

At 00:23:55 local time on September 12, 2026, an earthquake of magnitude 6.5 occurred. The epicenter was located 126 km northeast of the city of Teluknaga, Indonesia. This event drew increased attention to the submarine cable infrastructure in the region due to its proximity to important international data transmission routes.

Critical Cables in the Affected Zone

Within a radius of 500 km from the earthquake epicenter, several submarine cables play a crucial role in ensuring regional communication. Among them:

  • RISING 8 (1104 km, commissioned in 2026, operators Moratelindo and Triasmitra), passes through Tanjung Pakis, just 101.6 km from the epicenter.
  • JAKABARE (1330 km, RFS 2009, operator Indosat Ooredoo), also has an exit point in Tanjung Pakis.
  • Echo (17184 km, RFS 2025, operators Google and Meta), with a similar exit point.
  • Barat Timur Indonesia-1 (BTI-1) (4500 km, RFS 2028, operator PT Super Sistem Data), through Tanjung Pakis.
  • Apricot (11972 km, RFS 2025, Chunghwa Telecom and Google), also through Tanjung Pakis.
  • Barat Timur Indonesia-2 (BTI-2) (11600 km, operator PT Super Sistem Data), with an exit point in Pantai Mutiara, located 113.5 km from the epicenter.
  • Link 3 Phase-2 (342 km, RFS 2005, operator XLSmart), through Ancol, 115.4 km from the epicenter.
  • Matrix Cable System (1055 km, RFS 2008, operator Matrix NAP Info), with an exit point in Jakarta, 120.2 km from the epicenter.

These cables ensure connectivity both within Indonesia and between countries in Southeast Asia and other regions of the world.

Current Monitoring Data

According to our measurements, the RTT (round-trip time) indicators for the affected cables remain within baseline values. For example, the average RTT for RISING 8 is around 45 ms, which corresponds to normal standards for this route. Similar situations are observed for other cables such as JAKABARE and Echo, where the RTT indicators do not exceed expected values.

These data confirm that the infrastructure has withstood seismic impact and continues to operate in normal mode.

Significance of the Events for the Region

Indonesia is located in a high-seismic activity zone, making its submarine cables vulnerable to natural disasters. However, the resilience of systems such as RISING 8 and JAKABARE demonstrates their ability to cope with challenges associated with the region's geographical characteristics.

The stable operation of cables is particularly important for Indonesia, considering its role as a hub center for international internet traffic. Any disruptions could affect communication between Southeast Asia, Australia, and other regions.

Future Monitoring Plans

We will continue to monitor the condition of submarine cables in the earthquake zone to promptly detect any changes in their operation. Special attention will be given to cables with landing points in Tanjung Pakis, Pantai Mutiara, and Jakarta, which are closest to the epicenter.

In addition, we will track possible secondary aftershocks and their impact on infrastructure. Regular updates of data will allow for timely responses to any changes and ensure the continuity of global connectivity.
