How this works

Where do the measurements come from?

From our own observation points in several countries that continuously trace routes to thousands of network nodes and cable landing stations. We do not use third-party monitors.

Why is the speed of light involved?

Light in optical fibre travels about 200 km per millisecond. Comparing the straight-line distance with the measured round trip shows how direct your route is.

What does "if a cable breaks" mean?

We remove that cable from our graph and compute the next shortest path by latency. The number is the extra delay by physics alone; real detours depend on contracts and capacity, which we do not model.
