Connectivity in Norsup: A Small Link with Big Implications

Norsup, a modest settlement on the island of Malekula in Vanuatu, is set to become an important node in the nation's growing digital infrastructure. While it may not boast the multiple cables of Port Vila or the established presence of Luganville, Norsup will host the Tamtam submarine cable, a 411-kilometer connection scheduled to go live in 2027. This cable will link Norsup to other key landing points in Vanuatu, including Port Vila, Luganville, and Tanna, as well as internationally to New Caledonia.

The Role of Norsup in Vanuatu's Cable Network

Vanuatu's submarine cable system currently consists of two cables serving four landing points, with Norsup ranking in the top 75% of these by cable count. The Tamtam cable will be the sole connection landing here, making Norsup a single-cable point in a network where Port Vila stands out with two cables. Despite this, Norsup's inclusion in the Tamtam chain is significant for Malekula, the second-largest island in Vanuatu. It ensures that even smaller and more remote communities can access the benefits of modern connectivity. The cable's presence will enable Norsup to connect to both domestic and international networks. Locally, the cable links Norsup to other Vanuatu hubs like Port Vila and Luganville, which are critical for inter-island communication and data exchange. Internationally, the connection to New Caledonia opens up access to global internet routes, reducing reliance on satellite links and improving overall network reliability.

Latency Insights: A Window into Performance

GeoCables' latency monitoring has already provided valuable insights into the potential performance of the Tamtam cable at Norsup. Across 12 completed checks from six source cities, the average round-trip latency measured 306 milliseconds. Interestingly, the best observed latency was just 50 milliseconds, suggesting that under optimal conditions, Norsup could enjoy impressively fast connections to the outside world. This performance will be essential for enabling smooth internet services, whether for local businesses, schools, or residents.

Looking Ahead

As the Tamtam cable prepares to go live, Norsup's role in Vanuatu's digital landscape is poised to grow. While it may not yet rival the activity of Port Vila or Luganville, its inclusion in the cable network is a step toward more equitable connectivity across the archipelago. For Malekula, this development could open doors to new opportunities in education, commerce, and communication, helping the island bridge the gap between its remote location and the global digital economy.
